Gimnasia de La Plata have drawn level with River Plate at the top of the Final Championship, after Pedro Troglio’s men took down relegation candidates All Boys 2-1 to strengthen their chances of a first-ever professional title.
The Platense institution raised their hopes of an historic victory with an accomplished win at home, spurred in the first half by Lucas Licht. The left-back opened the scoring with a wonderful overhead kick after just eight minutes to fire his team in the lead.
Gustavo Bou’s cool finish with just over 20 minutes to play further widened the Lobo advantage. All Boys fought back through Jonathan Calleri’s goal, but could not find the equaliser even after the late expulsion of Omar Pouso.
With four games left to play in the Final, Gimnasia share the top spot with River Plate, both sides having recorded 27 points so far in the campaign. The Loco next week travel to Argentinos Juniors, knowing that a win and a failure by River to claim three points against Olimpo will see them claim the summit outright.
The Albo, meanwhile, have not won in seven games, and lie five points behind Godoy Cruz who, with a 3-0 thrashing of Rafaela, occupy the last place outside of the relegation zone.
