A staple food for most households in Argentina, bread is likely to face price controls as part of the Kirchnerism-sponsored Precios Cuidados program that aims at stemming inflation. News were confirmed by Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich who said “there is enough wheat to supply the milling production” in order to reach what he called a “sustainable prices agreement” in the sector.
During his daily brief to the press at the government house this morning, the head of ministers announced Domestic Trade Secretary Augusto Costa is expected to decide “this week” on a new price scheme for bread amid negotiations with the sector.
“There is enough bread to supply the level of milling production to reach a sustainable prices agreement,” Capitanich told reporters and added that “the international conflict in Ukraine” is fueling “upward trends in the price of wheat” as well.
Stepping up his criticism of private-sector retailers and business leaders in the government’s battle to hold back the rise in the prices of goods and serves, the cabinet Chief renewed the Kirchnerite position against “many businessmen” who «deliberately relabel prices.»
“We praise the attitude of some and harshly criticize the attitude of many. They are trying to lumber on the state with the responsibility of an eventual hike in prices,” Capitanich insisted and defended the government’s subsidy program, highly questioned by the opposition here, saying that such benefits aim at creating “more purchase power.”
Although he pointed out March is showing “stabilizing trends” in prices proving that “state intervention” helps to create public awareness, Jorge Capitanich accused business leaders of abusing consumers by “relabeling” products’ prices «deliberately.»
