Jorge Peyera Díaz’s well-taken goal and an excellent performance from goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín were the key’s for Lanús as they took down south Buenos Aires rivals Quilmes 1-0 this evening, pushing the club into title contention.
With 16 minutes remaining Pereyra Díaz steered the ball home with a header for the home team, who moved on to 13 points in the Torneo Final and who lie just two behind joint-leaders Estudiantes and Colón.
Quilmes, meanwhile, remain on six points and in the direct relegation places.
The team directed by Guillermo Barros Schelotto were on balance the better team on the night, although a Quilmes side focused on protecting the draw also had chances to hit the net.
Lanús dominated control of possession and territory, although they struggled to break the visitors’ fierce defence throughout the 90 minutes.
Just when it appeared that a draw was inevitable, a cross from the right hand side whipped in by Alejandro Silva found Pereyra Díaz, whose header left goalkeeper Silvio Dulcich no chance.
The Granate had to weather a late storm from the away team, but thanks to three key stops by Marchesín held on for maximum points. Lanús finish the eighth round of the Final in fourth place, having jumped nine positions by virtue of defeating their southern neighbours.
