Pope Francis has called for a “cease of violence and hostilities” in Venezuela and prayed for dialogue and reconciliation in a country that has seen both anti and pro government protesters flooding main cities’ streets over the past weeks.
“I am following with special apprehension what is going on these days in Venezuela and I bear for violence and hostilities to cease and for the Venezuelan people reach reconciliation through their politicians and institutions”, the first Latin American pope in history said during his weekly audiences in the Vatican.
The Argentine pontiff called for a “sincere dialogue” and “justice” that can help stop the wave of protests that have plunged the Caribbean country into violence and dead over the past weeks.
On November 6, Francis met leader of the Venezuelan opposition Henrique Capriles while on June 17 last year the he had granted President Nicolás Maduro a private audience.
