Schoolteachers affiliated with the CTERA trade union have announced a national day of protest for Wednesday as pay negotiations with the national government continue to falter, and added that a national strike was planned for March 5 and 6 if talks break down.
CTERA secretary-general Stella Maldonado today revealed the union’s resolution, while the group waits for an invitation from the government to continue talks on pay increases for the coming year.
Teachers’ representatives informed that the measures would begin with a protest scheduled for Wednesday of this week, while the first days of classes in March (5 and 6) would be disrupted by a 48-hour national strike.
The labour withdrawal will take place if the government does not advance on the offer of a 22 percent salary increase made previously and rejected by the unions, or if they decide to close negotiations and, as in the last two years, impose a wage increase by decree.
