Hundreds mourn firefighters who died in Barracas tragic blaze

despidenHundreds of people were mourning today nine firefighters who yesterday died when fighting a gigantic fire that detroyed a warehouse in Barracas neighbourhood. The building belonged to Iron Mountain international company.

Different ceremonies were being held in the city and the province of Buenos Aires.
Six firefighters who belonged to the Federal Police force were being mourned since midnight at the police headquarters, in Belgrano avenue and Virrey Cevallos street.
The victims were identified as Leonardo Day; 27-year-old Anahí Garnica, Eduardo Adrián Canessa, Damián Béliz, Maximiliano Martínez and Juan Matías Monticelli.

Raúl Garnica is the father of Anahí Garnica. A firefighter himself, he told reporters: “The pain for her death is immense, and with great pleasure I would trade places with her, if I could.”
«Anahí had always wanted to be a firefighter and the police would not accept women until a few years ago. So she began her studies because she was so intelligent, but as soon as she heard the police was hiring women, she rushed to apply,” he recalled.
According to sources from the Security Minister, the funeral will last until 4 pm and they will be laid to rest at the Chacarita Cemetery.
The funeral of another firefighter, Sebastián Campos, was being held until 2 pm at the fire hall were he worked, in La Boca city neighbourhood.
«Sebastián left us a little granddaughter. We will tell her that her father was a good, working, responsible guy and a good son,” Campos’ father said.
Civil Defense crew members Pedro Baricolo and José Méndez also died during the tragic fire. Baricolo was being mourned until 10 am in Villa Adelina, in Northern Buenos Aires province; while Méndez’ funeral was being held in the Southern locality of Wilde.
