Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich has defended the negotiations currently taking place with manufacturers to control prices confirming that an accord with the construction sector will be announced on Monday along with a new allocation of the Procrear housing loans. The head of ministers still warned about “unscrupulous” and “noxious” maneuvers of businessmen that threat Argentina’s “economic system.”
In his daily brief to the press at the government house, Capitanich praised the position of “a motor company” (Toyota) that yesterday announced that domestic market prices have not changed while “others” carry out “unscrupulous” and “damaging” maneuvers harming the country’s economic system. With the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner now intervening in the value change, the official added, the response is to “fiercely attack the government” and “affect consumers.”
When queried about the recent devaluation of the peso currency and the government’s decision to ease the purchase of US dollars for saving following a two-year-crackdown on foreign currency operations, the minister said savers «are free to do what they want to do with their money» but affirmed that Argentina’s financial system is “solid.”
That was when a reporter covering Capitanich’s press conference at the Casa Rosada presidential palace asked him about savers who have decided to still keep dollars at their homes instead of opening a bank account wondering –the reporter said- about Argentineans’ alleged “mistrust” in the country’s economic and financial path.
The financial system, the cabinet chief responded, has shown a “largely positive evolution” over the past years.
