As greenbacks continue to dominate media headlines over the past days, Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich today warned Argentina is under the threat of “speculative attacks,” a line President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner had already fired yesterday from Cuba where she is attending the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit.
The head of ministers denied allegations the Kirchnerite administration would release the names of the people buying the American currency since Friday’s decision to lift the government crackdown on the exchange market. “I did not say that names would be published as a newspaper has said but that the data would be informed, such as the amount of requested and executed operations,” Jorge Capitanich affirmed.
After outlining details about the price agreement and the efforts the government is coordinating to meet the accord expectations – “let producers have competitive prices and consumers fair prices”-, the official referred to this week’s meeting between President Kirchner and her Brazilian counterpart Dilma Rousseff in Havana where the CELAC summit is currently taking place.
“One of the subjects of the talks between the presidents of Argentina and Brazil has been precisely the speculative attacks that emerging countries are facing. We have seen it with Turkey, India, South Africa, Brazil. It is a strategy that has a modus operandi that has to do with systematic attacks by concentrated economic groups that many times count with the coordination of concentrated media groups,” Capitanich warned and explained that such maneuvers aim at “attacking” country’s currencies, create “recession” and then provide the same old neoliberal receipes such as trade liberalization which is something world powers “don’t do” as they instead protect their economies “banning» the entry of emerging countries’ products into their own economies.
“Let’s Argentineans not be naive. It is very good for Argentineans to know that who can defend their interests and pockets the most is a government thinking about them,” the cabinet chief said.
