Followed more than 40 days of absence, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner reappeared in public and launched a scholarship program from the Government House.
The new benefit is intended to unemployed youngsters’ between 18-24 years old, and it will be funded with the National Treasury reserves.
However, the President added that people who are part-time employees or work in a informal job will also be benefited by this measure.
Ministers, members of human rights organizations and political activists welcomed the head of state with songs and cheers.
“I would like to thank the guests from different cults who arrived today”, were Fernández de Kirchner first words, in her first public appearance since December.
“We are establishing a new social security system without precedents in our history, which takes care of people until they reach the age of 24,” she revealed.
Fernández de Kirchner considered that the 1.5 million of unemployed young people “are the sons of the neo-liberalism”, which represent 18,2 percent of a segment estimated in 5 million.
“They need the presence of the state to keep moving forward”, she added.
In that sense, Fernández de Kirchner expressed that the current situation is the result of several decades of absence and admitted that “one decade can’t fix everything. Many more decades are required”.
She anticipated to have meetings with unionist leaders in the upcoming days, and confirmed her participation at the CELAC conference in Cuba next week.
Vice president Amado Budou, Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich and Economy Minister Axel Kicillof were present at the event, among other key political figures.
