Julían Domínguez proposal of moving Argentina’s capital to a northern province continues to generate controversy between members of the Lower House.
Silvina García Larraburu, a national lawmaker from Río Negro’s province defended the project revealed by Congress Speaker Julian Dominguez
“The saturation within Buenos Aires City is getting more and more complex, and therefore, a decentralized administration is required,” stated García Larraburu.
However, she suggested her province as possible alternative, and in that sense she told that “we need to put an eye in the Patagonia region.”
Radical party member Ricardo Alfonsín expressed his “conceptual” adherence for the project, however he avoid a total support.
“Many problems would be resolved, because the interior has been postponed in favour of the big provinces,” assured Alfonsín, as he warned that the bill could be used as a “distraction.”
Meanwhile Fernando ‘Pino’ Solanas, President of the Unen bloc, strongly rejected the project and defined it “a joke”.
According to the Senator, “This bill would require a monumental investment, when the Central Bank reserves are currently falling.”
Domínguez reignited an old debate across Argentina when he said the country’s capital should be moved to the northern part of the country, refloating a proposal that was last seriously made in 1986 by former Radical (UCR) president Raúl Alfonsín.
