Berni assures ‘coordination’ against future looting

BerniSecurity Secretary Sergio Berni has asserted that there is a strong coordination between law enforcement authorities in the province and city of Buenos Aires, which according to the politician will allow a «greater operating capacity» in the face of further looting or acts of vandalism.

Berni spoke after several Argentine provinces were last week affected by a wave of looting, following the decision of police forces to stage strikes and protests during a dispute over salaries.

Speaking today, the secretary remarked that the month of December was a sensitive time for such crimes, but he guaranteed a «well-oiled coordination» over the holiday season.

«[December 19 and 20] are two very sensitive dates for the Argentine people, history shows that this type of crime always occurs on those dates,» he affirmed.

«What we do have is a well-oiled coordination not just with the province of Buenos Aires, but also with the City.»

Berni indicated that the objective of that cooperation was to «give the three police forces that are working in a practically shared area, the Federal and Metropolitan services as well as the Buenos Aires Province force, a greater operating capacity.»

The politician closed by referring to the violent acts of the previous week, stating he had no doubt that the looting was «a cause and not a consequence» of the police demands, and expressing his hope that the justice system would continue to investigate the events.
