New study shows Quilmes and José C Paz suffer highest murder rate

asesinatosSupreme Court minister Eugenio Raul Zaffaroni today released updated murder figures for the City of Buenos Aires and the wider conurbation, showing that homicides in the nation’s capital had declined over the past year.

Data in the Province, however, put the zone ahead of Europe and Canada with respect to murders committed, with the districts of Quilmes and José C. Paz suffering the highest levels per capita.

Zaffaroni revealed that in 2012, 995 people lost their lives in a homicide. 789 occurred in the Conurbation area bordering the City, while a further 158 happened inside the Capital and the remaining 48 in La Plata.

The City therefore registered a murder rate of 5.46 of 100,000 inhabitants, a noticeable drop from 2011 where the figure was 6.57. In the Conurbation, the average per 100,000 people was 7.66; with the highest numbers belonging to José C. Paz (12.79 per 100,000), Quilmes (12) and San Martin (10.8).

«In relation to the murder rates of Europe and Canada [the Buenos Aires figure] is high; in comparison to Latin America in general it is low, together with Uruguay and Chile,» the judge commented on presenting the figures, adding that the data only aspired to provide a general overview of the situation.
