Timerman asks Uruguay’s Mujica to ‘retract’ UPM decision, admits issue could go to Hague

TimermanForeign Minister Héctor Timerman today formally asked the government of José Mujica to desist in their plans to allow increased production at the UPM paper plant, revealing that Argentina hoped to reach an agreement with their Uruguayan counterparts before returning to The Hague.

The politician took the opportunity to make public the government’s position on recent events concerning the controversial installation – which environmental campaigners say pollutes the Uruguay River – during the presentation of the «complete report» on UPM’s ecological impact.

«In the last week we have used informal channels to request that Uruguay retract its decision about the increase in production and discuss with us again the environmental question, without an answer. At this point, the Argentine government formally asks the Uruguayan government to retract their decision and reopen dialogue,» Timerman explained.

Asked when Argentina would present their case before the International Court in The Hague, the minister admitted the decision could be made imminently.

«It could be a couple of days… We have already tried to obtain a response, we have sent two messages to Uruguayan authorities that have not been answered,» he fired.
