Despíte defeat, Lanús reach Sudamericana quarter final

lanusLanús could not overcome Universidad de Chile as the Buenos Aires side fell to a 1-0 in Santiago. A 4-0 win in the first leg, however, meant that the Granate advanced without problem to the Copa Sudamericana last-eight.

The side directed by Guillermo Barros Schelotto already had one foot in the next round thanks to that convincing victory last week, spent large parts of the game on the defensive.

Their rivals, however, could not find a way past a stout backline led by goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin, and only hit the net for the first time 68 minutes in when Charles Aranguiz scored.

Lanús therefore become the first Argentine side to qualify for the quarter-finals of the continental competition, while River Plate and Vélez Sarsfield will be hoping to join them as they complete their ties against Liga de Loja and La Equidad respectively.
