Racing president resigns amid HQ occupation

RacingPresident of troubled Racing Club Gastón Cogorno presented his resignation after a chaotic day which included the occupation and robbery of the team’s Avellaneda headquarters; but he will only step aside if vice-presidents Rodolfo Molina and Victor Blanco do likewise.

«My resignation has been tendered, waiting for those of Molina and Blanco so that the people can democratically choose the new president,» Cogorno revealed today on Twitter.

«Tomorrow I expect Molina and Blanco’s resignations to call new elections, if not, they should step aside and allow us to keep working.»

The move represents an escalation in the internal dispute between Cogorno and former chief Molina, who stepped aside for his successor in 2011. The conflict has been aggravated by Racing’s disappointing on-pitch form – the club are currently bottom with just two points from eight games – and was accompanied today by violent scenes around Avellaneda.

The tense day began with several threatening graffitis around the Juan Domingo Perón stadium, calling for the removal of both Cogorno and Molina. A group of ‘barra brava’ hooligans later occupied the club’s headquarters, stealing several computers including that of Racing accountant, Sílvio Esposito.

Neither Molina or Blanco have made a public statement over Cogorno’s demands for resignation.
