Horacio Cartes was sworn in today as the new president of Paraguay to succeed former head of state Federico Franco in a ceremony presided by the head of the Congress, Julio
César Velázquez.
During his inauguration speech, he pledged to fight poverty in a country with 39 percent of its 7 million people living in those conditions.
«We declare war on poverty,» the 57-year-old from the Colorado Party stressed.
Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was among the Latin American heads of state attending the inauguration ceremony in Asunción.
