Solid results from Citigroup Inc helped the S&P 500 end higher for an eighth straight day, the longest such streak since mid-January, though weak retail sales figures limited the gains.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 19.96 points, or 0.13 percent, at 15,484.26. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index was up 2.31 points, or 0.14 percent, at 1,682.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 7.41 points, or 0.21 percent, at 3,607.49.
European shares rose today after Chinese GDP data assuaged fears of a sharp slowdown that could hit global growth, and technical indicators pointed to further upside.
By 1018 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 had risen 2.64 points, or 0.2 percent to 1,198.09
