Scioli rejects teachers’ salary demands based on ‘low inflationary expectations’

ScioliBuenos Aires province unionized teachers are not destabilizing a government but families, Governor Daniel Scioli affirmed as he questioned the 96-hour walkout leaving 4,700,000 million students without classes for the 12th time this year.

Scioli said he respects workers’ right to strike but warned that the Teachers Union Front (FGD in Spanish) is not destabilizing a government but “9 million families and 4 million students.”

After heading an official rally in the provincial district of Vicente López, the Governor ruled out again the possibility to reopen negotiations and discuss the 22.6 percent salary hike decreed by his administration.

Reasons he outlined have to do with inflationary expectations. According to Scioli, estimations for the rest of 2013 are «lower» compared to March last year. “When we started to discuss collective bargaining negotiations, projected inflation was much higher than any analysis that can be done now when big efforts are being made to control prices,” he told reporters.

“We have made a very serious effort and made our proposal. I understand and respect the right to strike but also children have the right to be at school,” Scioli added as the FGD ends today a 4-day walkout and threatens with further actions for next week.
