Head of Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo Estela de Carlotto took a special meesage to Pope Francis renewing the human rights organization’s long-standing request to have the files of the Vatican and Argentina’s Catholic Church open, a move they believe could help find information about the 400 children kidnapped by the military during the 1976-1983 dictatorship.
“We wish that in his new role as the maximum authority of the Catholic Church, (the pontiff) can mediate in the necessary mechanisms to collaborate in the search of almost 400 grandchildren who have not yet recovered their true identities and also help us to know what happened with our disappeared sons and daughters,” the letter handed in by Carlotto to ex cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio reads.
Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo also demanded the opening of the “Vatican files as well as the ones that exist in Argentina’s archbishoprics to know if there is any data» about their missing loved ones.
“We beg your Holiness to explain the members of Church and its parishioners that it is a Christian duty to provide information about the fate of children who were disappeared” by the military, the message continues and affirms that “hiding” crimes against humanity “involves a sin.”
