Arms smuggling case: Menem appeals to Supreme Court

Former president of Argentina Carlos Saúl Menem has appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice the sentence that convicted him of smuggling arms to Croatia and Ecuador during the 90’s.

Judiciary sources have confirmed that Menem’s lawyer Maximiliano Rusconi appealed against the ruling after a federal cassation court overturned his acquittal yesterday.

The two-time president of Argentina lodged the appeal to the Supreme Court to review the ruling by a Cassation Court earlier in March that held him responsible of “being co-author of the offense of aggravated contraband.”

Although prison terms must yet be settled by an economic tribunal, the now 82-year old senator could face 8-12 years in jail.

Defence Minister during Menem’s administration Oscar Camilion was also found guilty.
