Puricelli denies shortage of food, medication in South Orkney Islands

Defence Minister Arturo Puricelli denied rumours that the South Orkney Islands, where an Argentine Antarctic base is located, is missing food and medications.

Puricelli also assured that the park ranger who made the accusations, Mariano Ignacio Spiso, is undergoing “psychiatric treatment.”

The minister was referring to a series of articles that were published in the morning newspapers, which described a situation of delays in the ministry’s annual logistics campaign in Antarctica and that for the first time in 60 years Argentina is in danger of closing a base in the region.

Puricelli assured that “the accusations are baseless. Our place in Antarctica is not in danger.”

“They are saying that there is no food in the South Orkney Islands, but we have enough food for two more months and fuel for three more months there,” he assured.

He also explained that the delays in the logistics campaign responds to the fact that the base was closed from October on due to weather conditions. “The ice is only breaking now,” he assured.
