Ricardo Lorenzetti.
The head of the Supreme Court, Ricardo Lorenzetti, assured that the nation’s highest court “is not supposed to govern”, but he vindicated its duty to tell the political world when its decisions go against the Constitution.” He also said he agrees with the need to change de Judicial branch.
“The Court mustn’t govern, it must be consistent with the majority of the population and with what the Executive and Legislative branches do through legislation. But there’s abundant historical evidence that majorities have made grave unconstitutional decisions, such as supporting the Holocaust, state terrorism or the death penalty,” he warned.
Lorenzetti also said that “we’ve never told the political power what must be done, but what rather what goes against the Constitution or what the Constitution wants us to do.”
He closed by calling on everyone to focus on “the large issues” and guarantee the Rights of the citizens.
