‘The country can’t be held hostage by corporate interests,’ Sabbatella

The head of the AFSCA media watchdog, Martín Sabbatella, questioned the recent ruling by the by a Federal Court that benefited media giant Grupo Clarín by extending an injunction over two articles of the Media Law, and assured that “neither the country nor its institutions can be held hostage by corporate interests.”

“The Law is constitutional until a final ruling says otherwise. If not, then there’s just no possible judicial order,” he said in an interview.

“Neither the country nor its institutions can be held hostage by corporate interests. If a decision made in Congress is blocked by a minor sector that is capable of exerting a great deal of pressure, the risk for democracy and society is very big and very serious,” he explained.

“We must always presume that a bill passed in Congress is constitutional. If a law can be blocked without resolution for more that three years then everything becomes unstable. This harms democracy and governability.”

He also considered that the court that extended the injunction “is shameful,” adding that “we need the judiciary to break free from corporate, economic pressures.”
