Lawmakers in the Lower House of Congress approved ‘per saltum’ bill in a special session, with 135 votes in favour and 95 against the measure, will allow the Supreme Court to pass laws without going through the full legal process.
«I want to clearly state what we are discussing: Clarín isn’t behind freedom of press, or freedom of speech. It is defending its hegemonic position, which has given the group so much power that is seeking to defend and that is has used to condition in the last 30 years of Argentine democracy,’ Victory Front caucus leader Agustín Rossi said before voting.
Meanwhile, the head of the Radical Party bloc, Ricardo Gil Lavedra, warned that «this law will be known as the 7D law, as the Clarín law. This is not plurality, this only represents the Government’s voice.»
The Government hopes the Supreme Court will intervene in the injunction filed by Clarín Group against article 161 of the Media Law, which must be solved before December 7th.
