Victory Front’s Senator Aníbal Fernández came on stage today to defend two draft bills minded by the government that propose the inclusion of optional voting rights for minors between the ages of 16 and 18, as well the inclusion of foreign residents, which will raise voters by three million.
During a radio interview, the Senator explained that the project must not be understood as a government’s pursue of manipulating the vote of the masses, but rather that “The preject’s objective is very simple, we can’t deny the fact that people mature faster nowadays than 70 or 80 years ago.”
Likewise, Fernández remembered “Times change. My father was not eligible to vote until he was 28, then in my time legal age was lower to 21, then it changed again and my son can start voting at the age of 18. Plus, we are not forcing anyone to vote. They’ll be eligible to vote, so they will only vote if they feel like it, not otherwise.”
To end, the former Cabinet Chief justified the projects by saying, “This can be good for every political force, both government and opposition. No one has anything for granted. Those who are doing terrific today can do badly in a near future. Projects like these will push both the government and opposition to transmit a clean and clear message.”
