President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner asked the United Kingdom to “give peace a chance” in an advertisement article published today on British newspapers such as The Times and The Guardian.
The Head of State made a plea on the day that marks the 30th anniversary of the end of the Malvinas War fought between the United Kingdom and Argentina over the sovereignty of the South Atlantic Archipelago.
According to the article, there have been 39 United Nations resolutions requiring the two countries to «negotiate a peaceful solution in order to end the dispute.»
“On January 3rd, 1833, a British naval force expelled the Argentine legitimate authorities and population from the Malvinas Islands. Ever since then, Argentina has relentlessly demanded their restitution before national and international forums,» she wrote.
She went on to ask British people to put an end to “colonialism” and to “give peace a chance.”
«We, Argentines, ask all of you – citizens and governments of the world – to put an end to colonialism and to demand compliance with UN resolutions. We ask the United Kingdom to give peace a chance,» Kirchner concluded.
