The death toll rose to a total of ten people following the collision last night between a coach and a truck in the area of Caraguatay, Misiones, the mayor of Montecarlo, Julio César Barreto confirmed today.
Barreto confirmed to the press this morning that the six initial victims of the crash died “instantly” after the crash, when the bus caught fire. Four other people suffered severe burns and died of their wounds shortly after. There are still twenty people badly injured.
“We are very taken aback by this accident. It’s the worst accident to ever take place in Montecarlo,” Barreto furthered.
“Even though we have not yet been informed of the causes of this crash, it could well be put down to human error. One of the two drivers must have fallen asleep.”
“The wounded were taken to Montecarlo and Puerto Rico hospitals, while the worst cases were taken to an emergency medical centre in Eldorado,” the Montecarlo mayor stated.
The crash itself took place yesterday evening along Route 12, at kilometre 1560 – close to the town of Posadas.
Police sources said that it was a head-on collision, whereafter the passenger bus immediately burst into flames.
