Gov’t requests WTO take down ‘excessive’ barriers on international trade

Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman with WTO director Pascal Lamy.
Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman requested that the World Trade Organization (WTO) “take down the new barriers on international trade” he considered to be “driven excessively by developed countries.” Timerman is currently in Paris and today met with WTO director Pascal Lamy.
The Foreign Ministry released a communiqué that said Timerman “has asked the WTO to take down the new barriers on trade put up by developed countries,” saying that they are “hiding behind the excuse of protecting the planet.”
The minister also spoke of “pressure on developing countries to absorb surplus production from developed countries that they can’t consume, due to the current economic crisis.”
