Obama drops plan to limit global warming gases

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama says he will look for ways other than putting a ceiling on greenhouse gases to curb global warming.
Obama, in remarks at a White House press conference Wednesday, said his earlier proposal for «was one way of skinning that cat.» Known as «cap-and-trade,» the legislation featured economic incentives to reduce carbon emissions from power plants, vehicles and other sources.

Obama said he would look for other means of addressing global warming that don’t ignore the science but will also not hurt the economy.

The Democratic-controlled House passed a cap-and-trade bill in 2009, but many Senate Democrats joined Republicans in blocking the bill from further action. Republicans dubbed the bill cap-and-tax because it would raise energy prices.
