Uribe, who cracked down on drug-running guerrillas during his two terms as president, is a featured guest at the WOM Leadership Symposium.
Colombian former President Alvaro Uribe arrived this morning at the Gran Rex Theater located downtown Buenos Aires City where he is due to give a conference this afternoon. Yesterday, police defused a small explosive device hidden in the stage, raising suspicions that left-wing Colombian rebels may have been involved in plot against the former head of state.
A massive security scheme was set to ensure the former President’s safety today.
Yesterday, following the device’s discovery, the theatre was evacuated and surrounded by police while the bomb was deactivated and the building searched.
Police sources confirmed that cleaning personnel had discovered a “box or package” close to the stage in the theatre and called the police.Last night, Federal Police sources revealed that the bomb “was likely to have been” little more than a firecracker.
Hours after the alleged bomb had been discovered and removed, the organizers of today’s event, the WOM Latam Leadership Symposium, stated that they had met with the former president and that Uribe had decided to continue with the event.
After the incident, current Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos vowed to guarantee Uribe’s safety and asked a Colombian police official to investigate the plot. “ I have asked General Naranjo to consistently investigate the bomb device found in Argentina,” Santos wrote.
“The Colombian government is doing and will do everything in its power to ensure former President Uribe and his family’s safety,” the Colombian President twitted.
Uribe, who cracked down on drug-running guerrillas during his two terms as president, is a featured guest at the WOM Leadership Symposium. Other speakers at today’s event include Manuel Estiarte, Barcelona football club’s Foreign Relations director, as well as the founder and former director of Cirque du Soleil, Guy Caron.
