Fluminense defeats Arsenal in Copa Libertadores

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -Fluminense of Brazil defeated Argentina’s Arsenal 2-1 on Wednesday in Group 4 of the Copa Libertadores.

In another Group 4 match, Boca Juniors drew 0-0 with Zamora of Venezuela.

Fluminense and Boca Juniors had already advanced to the knockout stage of Latin America’s most important club tournament. Fluminense finished with 15 points followed by Boca with 13. Arsenal finished with six and Zamora with one.

In Group 6, Brazil’s Corinthians defeated Deportivo Tachira of Venezuela 6-0, and Mexico’s Cruz Azul won 4-1 against Nacional of Paraguay.

Corinthians and Cruz Azul had already advanced to the knockout stage. Corinthians finished with 14 points with Cruz Azul on 11. Nacional ended with four and Tachira had three.

Danilo, Paulinho, Jorge Henrique, Emerson, Liedson and Douglas scored for Corinthians.

The Copa Libertadores is the only major competition Corinthians has yet to win. The popular Brazilian club won FIFA’s inaugural Club World Cup in 2000.

Fourteen of the 16 berths in the second round have been determined. The last two will be decided on Thursday with Brazilian clubs Santos and Internacional the favorites to advance.

The teams that have already secured their spots are: Lanus, Emelec, Universidad Espanola, Fluminense, Boca Juniors, Libertad, Vasco da Gama, Corinthians, Cruz Azul, Velez Sarsfield, Atletico Nacional, Universidad de Chile, Deportivo Quito and Bolivar.
