Peruvian President Ollanta Humala is surrounded by rescuers and press during a surprise visit to the base camp at the Cabeza de Negro copper mine, 1,300 meters above sea level in the Andes east of Ica, 325 km south of Lima, on April 10, 2012.
The nine miners who were trapped since last Thursday in the Cabeza de Negro mine in Ica, southern Peru, were successfully rescued today, Peruvian media informed.
The workers who were trapped 200 metres underground for the period of five days were helped out of the mine and were received by family members, Peruvian president Ollanta Humala and government officials Ana Jara and Energy and Mining minister Jorge Merino, Peru newspaper El Comercio reported today.
Once out of the mine, the miners were wearing dark glasses, in order to protect their eyes from sun damage, after having spent so much time underground.
Humala urged to the press, that health minister Alberto Tejada had processed the order to send the workers straight away to a medical centre, where they are to all undergo a check-up. Before being sent there, they were being attended by paramedics in above ground tents close to the mine.
