A Santa Fe province mayor to replace Schiavi as Transport Secretary

The Mayor of Granadero Baigorria town in Santa Fe province Alejandro Ramos will replace Juan Pablo Schiavi at the Transport Secretariat following the latter’s resignation, official sources confirmed.

Earlier today Schiavi handed in his resignation, just two weeks after the Once rail crash, which killed 51 and injured over 700. In the resignation letter sent to President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner Schiavi explained he had stepped down for medical reasons.

“I am to be treated for a transluminal coronary angioplasty and another two simple angioplasties, which both require a minimum of sixty days of recovery time following medical advice. The nature of the position that I was honoured with, paired with the changes being made in the sector require total dedication without a period of rest; incompatible with my current reality,” read the letter written from Schiavi to the President.

The head of Transport checked into hospital last Wednesday with chest pains, for which he was treated and released after two days.

The announcement comes amid growing tensions between the national and city governments over the subway transfer and also the aftermath following the Once train crash.
