‘Import barriers shouldn’t affect industrial levels,’ De Mendiguren warns

The head of the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA), José de Mendiguren, warned this morning that local industry is “highly dependant on imports”, and asked the national government to pay attention so that import barriers don’t affect the production levels
“We [UIA] have already warned that the production levels of Argentina are closely linked to those of supplies imports. For every point the national industrial index edges up, we see a 4 points increase of the supplies imports.”
Likewise, De Mendiguren stated that “We all want to see a trade balance surplus by the end of the year, but we are just warning that the new import legislation should not affect the industrial activity.”
