As tension between the National Government and Hugo Moyano continue to grow, the secretary general of the Construction Workers’ Union (Uocra) Gerardo Martínez seemed to agree with the CGT leader’s recent statements when he said that “making demands does not equal blackmailing.”
The head of the Luz y Fuerza trade union, Oscar Lescano, also seemed to support for Moyano.
“Making demands does not equal blackmailing. I think Moyano is saying exactly what should be said. The President has to look after the rights of all Argentines and understand that the labour sector has the right to make specific demands, like it’s happening now,” he said.
However, Martínez said that even though Moyano’s demands are “valid,” he was “surprised by the hardline speech” he gave last Thursday in a rally at the Huracán stadium.
“Many of us in the board are surprised by the way he behaved during the rally because Moyano is the secretary general or the truckers’ union, but at the same time he’s the secretary general of the CGT,” he said.
He also said that the relationship between the umbrella union and President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner “is not broken” and urged both sides to continue to engage in dialogue.
Earlier today, the head of the Luz y Fuerza trade union, Oscar Lescano, made similar statements and hinted that a CGT reunification between Moyano sector, the “fat cats” and the “independents” is possible.
Lescano urged the workers’ movement to “unite” and assured that the CGT secretary general “can remain in his post,” but warned that the umbrella union “should be under a new administration, with a new man at the helm.”
“We’ve gone through times in which we had five different leaders and we still united. Now it’s time to do the same,” he pointed out. “I’m not against Moyano being a part of the CGT. I’m just against him leading it.”
Lescano praised Moyano for “always being there to support the Government since 2003. He has done a lot and I’m not sure he’s been repaid correctly.”
However, he said that he had hoped for something different.
“I expected him to say he needs the Government and that he needs an answer to his concerns,” he concluded.
