Wall Street pares gains as GE, banks weigh

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Stocks pared gains and the Dow industrials and S&P 500 turned negative on Friday, weighed by declines in General Electric and top-tier banks.
The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) fell 27.85 points, or 0.25 percent, to 11,066.72. The Standard & Poor’s 500 (.SPX) dropped 0.86 points, or 0.07 percent, to 1,172.95. The Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) gained 13.48 points, or 0.55 percent, to 2,448.86.

Indexes opened higher after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke pointed to another round of monetary easing from the central bank, but data showing consumer sentiment fell in early October, hurting the market.
