The Kansas City Royals traded outfielder Melky Cabrera to the San Francisco Giants for left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez and minor league prospect Ryan Verdugo, the Major League Baseball teams said.
Cabrera, 27, hit .305 in his only season with the Royals after spending five years with the New York Yankees and the 2010 season with Atlanta. He had career highs in batting average, home runs (18) and runs batted in (87) last season.
Sanchez, 28, posted a 13-9 record with the Giants during their 2010 World Series title season but slumped to 4-7 in 2011 and missed the final month of the season with a sprained left ankle. He pitched a no-hitter for the Giants in 2009.
Verdugo, also a left-hander, went 8-6 in the minor leagues last season.
