Juan Martin Del Potro eases past Kevin Anderson in straight sets on Thursday in Valencia. Del Potro is through to a quarterfinal clash against Sam Querrey.
Juan Martin Del Potro thrashed Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the Valencia Open 500 on Thursday night. Del Potro improved to 3-0 against Anderson this season while needing one hour and 31 minutes to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Sam Querrey.
The Argentine, who is fine form after finishing runner-up last weekend in Vienna, jumped out to a fast start by seizing the first set’s only break in the third game. Del Potro had no trouble serving it out from there as he dropped a mere three points in five service games.
Anderson donated serve again at 3-3 in the second to fall into a significant hole. Out of nowhere, though, the 30th-ranked South African broke right back for 4-4. A third consecutive break went to Del Potro for a 5-4 advantage and this time he made no mistake. The world No. 14 served out the proceedings at 30, capitalizing on his second match point.
Del Potro wrapped up his effort with four aces and he faced only one break point–which he failed to save–the entire way. Anderson also finished with four aces and he fought off only three of six break points.
