Boca extends lead with win over Atletico Rafaela

Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) – Boca Juniors topped second-place Atletico Rafaela 3-1 on Sunday to extend its lead atop Argentina’s Apertura.

With 31 points on the year, Boca now has an eight-point cushion ahead of Atletico Rafaela, which has lost two of its last three contests.

Nicolas Blandi scored twice in the opening 17 minutes to clinch the win for Boca with Cristian Chavez adding a third in the 86th minute. Alexis Nicolas Castro pulled a late goal back for Atletico in the 89th minute.

Boca has now won two straight and has the by far the best goal differential in the league, netting 17 goals while only conceding four.

Sunday’s other action saw Colon earn a 1-0 victory over Belgrano after a penalty kick in the 80th minute from Esteban Fuertes, and Mario Regueiro struck in the 81st minute to lift Lanus to a 2-1 win over Godoy Cruz. San Lorenzo was set to square off against All Boys, but the fixture was postponed.

On Monday, Javier Carrasco and Juan Pablo Avendano exchanged goals four minutes apart in the second half as Tigre and Union played to a 1-1 draw, while Estudiantes and Racing finished scoreless in La Plata. San Martin also edged Banfield 2-1 to snap a three-game winless skid.

On Saturday, Adrian Lucero scored in the 87th minute for Olimpo in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Newell’s, and Independiente was held at home against Arsenal in a 0-0 draw. A brace from Santiago Salcedo helped Arg. Juniors to a 3-1 win over nine-man Velez Sarsfield, halting a four-game winning run pieced together by the reigning champions.
