Markets extend gains, S&P and Nasdaq up 1 percent

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. stocks extended their gains and the S&P and Nasdaq rose 1 percent on Tuesday, helped by a round of solid earnings, including from Ford (F.N), 3M Co (MMM.N) and United Parcel Service (UPS.N).

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was up 117.80 points, or 0.94 percent, at 12,597.68. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (.SPX) was up 13.66 points, or 1.02 percent, at 1,348.91. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was up 29.11 points, or 1.03 percent, at 2,854.99.
