The corruption scandal engulfing the football’s governing body has had a new chapter with Argentine businessmen Hugo and Mariano Jinkis receiving a formal request to be extradited to the United States where they face charges of winning and keeping hold of lucrative media rights contracts from regional soccer federations through the payment of up to $110 million in bribes.
Hugo Jinkis and his son Mariano arrived at a federal court in the Buenos Aires City neighbourhood of Retiro today to attend a hearing called by Judge Claudio Bonadío.
The former owners of Full Play, a sports media and marketing business headquartered in Argentina, were likely to appeal the extradition seeking to delay the process.
Along with Alejandro Burzaco, the Jinkis are among nine football officials and five sports media and promotions executives hit with US corruption charges involving more than $150 million in bribes.
