Bagnis bags gold for Argentina

Tennis player wins in singles; swimmer Grabich clinches silver with national record
TORONTO — Facundo Bagnis defeated Colombian Nicolás Barrientos in the tennis men’s single final yesterday to clinch a new gold medal for Argentina in the Pan-American Games in Toronto.
The 25-year-old Bagnis thrashed his opponent 6-1 6-2 at the York University Tennis Centre.
In the match for the bronze medal, Guido Andreozzi lost to Dennis Novikov of the US 6-4 6-4 and could not join Bagnis in the podium.
However, they managed to take another medal together, as they claimed silver in doubles. In the final, the Argentines lost to Chileans Nicolás Jarry and Hans Podlipnik Castillo 6-4 7-6 (7-5).
“To represent Argentina is the best thing that a sportsman can ever live and that’s why I didn’t doubt to come here when they called me,” Bagnis said after winning the singles final.
Meanwhile, María Irigoyen and Andreozzi clinched a new gold medal for Argentine by winning the mixed doubles final yesterday. The pair defeated Philip Bester and Gaby Dabrowski of Canada 6-3 6-0. It’s the seventh gold for Argentina.
Earlier, Irigoyen and Andreozzi reached the final by beating Verónica Cepede and Diego Galeano of Paraguay 1-6 6-3 10-7.
It was another great day for Argentine swimmer Federico Grabich, who clinched the silver medal in 200m freestyle. He clocked 1min, 47sec. 62/100 to make a new Argentine record. Yesterday he finished only 1sec20 behind winner João De Lucca of Brazil, who recorded a 1min,46sec.42.
Grabich, who won the 100m freestyle gold medal on Tuesday, also competed in the 4X200 freestyle relay, but Argentina finished fifth.
There were more medals for Argentina in the last day of rowing. They finished their participation in Toronto with one silver and three bronzes.
Joaquín Iwan, Axel Haak, Osvaldo Suárez, Francisco Esteras, Iván Carino, Rodrigo Murillo, Diego López, Agustín Díaz and Joel Infante (captain) claimed silver in the men’s eight race.
Earlier, Lucía Palermo and Brian Rosso clinched bronze medals in women’s and men’s singles sculls, respectively.
Karina Wilvers, Laura Abalo, Milka Kraljev and María Rohner also won bronze in women’s quadruple sculls.
In field hockey, the Leonas claimed its second straight victory in the group stage by beating Canada 5-0.
Delfina Merino, Florencia Habif, Noel Barrionuevo, Julia Gomes Fantasia and Agustina Albertario scored for Argentina.
