The 2nd Federal Oral Court has barred ex-president Carlos Menem, former judge Juan José Galeano and other defendants from leaving the country, as the accused prepare to face trial for covering up the events of the 1994 AMIA bombing.
According to the court, the decision was taken in order to avoid «possible inconveniences that could lead to the trial becoming delayed or postponed due to absences.
With the trial due to begin on August 6, a total of 13 defendants were ordered to stay in Argentina for the next month. As well as Menem and Galeano, the list includes former prosecutors Eamon Mullen and José Barbaccia; ex-SIDE spy chief Hugo Anzorreguy; and Patricio Finnen, ex-DAIA leader Rubén Beraja, Carlos Telleldín, Ana Boragni, Juan Carlos Anchezar, former Metropolitan Police chief Jorge Palacios and Carlos Castañeda.
