The Tribunal Palace was the setting today for a massive march backing the restoration of judge Luis María Cabral to the Cassation Court, with participants criticising the government’s treatment of the Judiciary during the mobilisation.
Opposition politicians were located in the second row behind the stage, where Magistrates’ Association Ricardo Recondo gave a speech laden with heavy criticism of the government.
«We have decided to make it known that we will not allow the independence of the Judiciary and democracy to be disturbed, because a democracy without an independent Judiciary is decidedly less of a democracy,» Recondo told the crowds, who expressed their support.
The president of the entity claimed that «these attacks are nothing new, but they show a tendency which seems to be irreversible, to stop the Judiciary fulfilling its constitutional duty to control the overlap of other powers.»
Recondo also criticised the Executive power of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner for «politicising and coopting magistrates» and emphasised that «the only legitimate justice is an independent one.»
«Along the way, the Supreme Court went from being described as the best to become an object of attack of every nature and we have come to the indignity of harrassing a judge like Doctor Carlos Fayt,» he fired.
Cabral was among those present for the march calling for his reinstatement, alongside UCR presidential hopeful Ernesto Sanz; PRO lawmaker Laura Alonso; Cambiemos candidate for Parlasur Mariana Zuvic; and president of the National General Auditors Leandro Despouy.
Prosecutor José María Campagnoli, UATRE general secretary Gerónimo ‘Momo’ Venegas, prosecutor Germán Moldes and judicial trade union secretary Julio Piumato were also among those present.
Speaking to the press prior to the rally, Cabral said that it should be interpreted as «an act of defence of the Republic.»
«I am grateful from a personal point of view, but I think that here there is an issue that goes beyond people, which is an institutional regime that must be defended to have an independent justice system,» he considered.
