Judge allows house arrest for accused Jinkis

Federal judge Claudio Bonadio has rejected bail appeals from Hugo and Mariano Jinkis, the father and son accused in the FIFA bribery scandal, although the pair were allowed to leave jail and remain under house arrest.

Judicial sources told NA that the magistrate imposed a payment of 4 million pesos as a guarantee for Hugo, and a further 8 million for the businessman’s son Mariano. The accused will now undergo the extradition process requested by the United States Justice Department.

The Jinkis handed themselves into the authorities last week after facing an arrest warrant from both the Argentine authorities and Interpol. The Full Play executives were indited alongside ex-Torneos CEO Alejandro Burzaco for alleged bribes to senior football officials.

Burzaco remains under house arrest in Italy, where he also awaits extradition to the US.

Under the terms of the house arrest agreed with Bonadio, the pair were prohibited from leaving the country, handed over their passports and were fitted with electronic tags in line with Bonaerense Prison Services regulations. Hugo and Mariano will also have to present themselves before the judge every Friday to ensure compliance with the measures.

Hugo will carry out his house arrest in San Isidro, while Mariano is confined to an address in Los Cardales.
