Marchesín called up for Argentina to replace injured Andújar

Goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín has been added to the Argentina Copa America squad as an emergency replacement by coach Gerardo Martino, after Mariano Andújar was forced out of the Chile tournament with a hand injury.

The Napoli shot-stopper fractured a bone in his right hand during the warm-up prior to Saturday’s game against Jamaica. He has already left for Argentina, where he will undergo surgery on the break in Buenos Aires.

The president of Mexican club Santos Laguna subsequently confirmed that the Argentine Football Association had contacted him in order to call up ex-Lanús man Marchesín to the squad.

«I have spoken to Agustín and I understand the national team is one of his biggest dreams, that is why he will be joining in the coming hours,» Alejandro Irarragorri told NA.

Marchesín was one of four goalkeepers included in Martino’s original list of 30 for the Copa. The player eventually lost out on a place in the squad, however, with Sergio Romero, Nahuel Guzmán and Andújar taking the trio of spots.

Andújar meanwhile, will attempt to rejoin the Albiceleste group as a supporter in time for Friday, when the team take on Colombia in the quarter-final.
