Judge Piombo denies quitting as magistrate

Judge Horacio Piombo, one of the magistrates who controversially lowered the sentence of a rapist convicted of assaulting a six-year-old, has denied quitting his post.

«I did not resign. I went to Court to do some administrative work,» Piombo, who resigned from his position at the University of La Plata two days ago, said.

Earlier today, Buenos Aires province Justice Minister Ricardo Casal had suggested Piombo had resign.

A Change.org petition demanding Piombo and fellow judge Sal Llargués be impeached and removed from their positions has gathered over 185,000 signatures online.
