City mayor Mauricio Macri has assured leaders of the Argentine Transport Workers Confederation (CATT) that under his presidency collective salary bargaining would not be affected, while also promising to modify the income tax system and lower inflation.
The presidential election hopeful and PRO leader lunched today with unionists close to Teamster Hugo Moyano following Sunday’s convincing victory in the City PASO primary polls. Macri’s favoured candidate Horacio Rodríguez Larreta triumphed by a wide margin, with the party as a whole picking up 47 percent of the total vote.
When asked by those present if he would maintain the wage negotiation system, the mayor replied «of course,» adding that it was «a useful instrument» while warning that «we must also talk about productivity.»
According to senator Diego Santilli, who accompanied Macri in the meeting, the PRO leader also promised to lower inflation levels and change income tax floors to help those in the sector reached by the levy. The government’s refusal to touch the tax scales was a major factor in recent general strikes led by transport unions.
«As a part of the national campaign, we listened to proposals and we presented our vision because we will make Argentina as a whole,» Santilli affirmed when asked about the encounter, which took place at the headquarters of the Fraternidad train union in Balvanera.
