Stiuso AMIA accusation moves forward

Former spy chief Antonio Stiuso will be investigated for allegedly hiding documents or information concerning the 1994 AMIA bombing investigations, after a prosecutor ruled in favour of continuing the case against the ex-SIDE head.

Federal prosecutor Juan Pedro Zoni decided to investigate ‘Jaime’ in a document send to judge Rodolfo Canicoba Corral, who is in charge of the case.

Zoni determined that Stiuso merits investigation to find out whether in his role as director of operations in the SIDE intelligence agency, he centralised all AMIA evidence and searches without leaving any record of the steps taken, or if proof exists of documentation being hidden.

In his presentation, the prosecutor holds that on request of the AMIA special unit the existence of documentation pertaining to the attack was unearthed, and that in the Operations division that centrally managed the case no record or reports of that action has been found.

Stiuso had been summoned to explain the anomaly, but after he failed to present himself before the courts a criminal complaint was filed.

Zoni also requested various tests, including records from the AMIA special unit previously headed by the late Alberto Nisman concerning investigation requests made to Stiuso and the answers the ex-SIDE chief gave the unit.

If the accusations are verified Stiuso could be charged for crimes ranging from derelictio of public duty to removing evidence, although in Zoni’s presentation the prosecutor did not name any particular charge.
