Senate passes railway nationalisation into law

The Senate has passed into law the bill which proposes the nationalisation of the railway system, which expected to pass into law with an overwhelming majority of both government and opposition senators voting in favour of the initiative.

The bill, sent to Congress in March by President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, was approved with 56 votes in favour of nationalisation, and just two against.

The bill declares «the reactivation policy of passenger and cargo railways in the public interest and a primary objective,» and would also create a new company, Ferrocarriles Argentinos State Society, which would be responsible for running the entire national trains network.

It also stipulates that the Executive «must adopt the necessary measures with the objective of resuming full administration of railway infrastructure across the nation and control over the control systems of train circulation.»
